Haven

I stepped in to the small patch of trees
At the bend in the road,
The hillside sloping gently away..
And a peace came over me,

Noises of the city now in the distance,
The treetop breeze
A welcoming swoosh of cool air..
Enveloped in warm patches of sun

Soft, pine-needle layered floor
Cones falling where they may,
Evidence of much activity, but
Only Nature’s rules here...

Birdsong echoes around,
Careless of the world’s troubles;
New shoots reach up,
Blossoms shower the earth

I will come back to this place in my mind
When I need to slow down,
And breathe in the richness
That life has to offer.
